Improve Your Computer Speed By Repairing Your Regedit
By Jack Harper | Editor
If your Windows Registry develops a problem then it will hamper the overall speed and performance of your computer. Repairing Regedit can be one of the solutions especially if you think it is corrupted. But the question is how you can do it? You can either use programs like Registry Easy, Reg Cure and Error Nuker or you can even do it manually. There are certain risks in doing it manually like if there is even the smallest of changes in any of the keys then it might hamper the functioning of your operating system or any other program. Hence you need to be extremely careful; in fact cautious is word, when repairing Regedit.
It is always recommended to take a back-up of the Windows Registry so that it can be restored later if anything does go wrong. Repairing Regedit is not an easy task and if you have even the smallest of doubts then instead of doing it manually, download software that can do the task for you. There are times when the regedit functionality can get disabled and this happens mostly when it is infected by a virus and in such cases, it might even stop you from accessing it.
If you find the folder option inexistent then it means that the regedit might have been infected by some of the more dangerous viruses like Brontok, which has the capability to stop you from accessing your system’s .exe files. Some of the .exe files that you will use at some point of time include msconfig.exe, regedit.exe, etc. Every time, you try to run any of the .exe files, the virus within your computer will restart the machine and this can be quite a frustrating moment. You can solve this problem by repairing regedit. You can also solve it by accessing the regedit.exe function and once you are inside, you can actually delete the Brontok or any other virus by opening:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\CURRENT VERSION\RUN\ in msconfig startup.
If the above doesn’t work then you can use unhook.inf from Symantec. This specific program will be able to help you in providing access to the regedit window. You need to paste the following codes:
Signature=”$Chicago$” Provider=Symantec
[DefaultInstall] AddReg=UnhookRegKey
[UnhookRegKey] HKLM, Software\CLASSES\batfile\shell\open\command,,,”"”%1″” %*” HKLM, Software\CLASSES\comfile\shell\open\command,,,”"”%1″” %*” HKLM, Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command,,,”"”%1″” %*” HKLM, Software\CLASSES\piffile\shell\open\command,,,”"”%1″” %*” HKLM, Software\CLASSES\regfile\shell\open\command,,,”regedit.exe “”%1″”" HKLM, Software\CLASSES\scrfile\shell\open\command,,,”"”%1″” %*” HKCU, Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System,DisableRegistryTools,0×00000020,0
Once you have copied and pasted the above code in a new notepad file then name it unhook.inf and save it. The moment you save it, the icon will change to that of a batch file icon. All you have to do now is run the unhook.inf file and then right click to install. This will help you to recover the regedit.exe file. But the truth however, depends on how much of regedit.exe was corrupted by the virus because some of the files might not be recoverable at all even after repairing regedit. But the one thing you need to remember is that if you have an anti-virus as well as registry cleaner like RegCure installed on your computer then you will be able to keep your PC safe.
